Prompt caching on Claude
Caching is explicit: mark the stable prefix with cache_control. Reads cost 0.1× the input price on most models, 0.05× on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 and 0.025× on Fable 5.1. Writes cost 1.25× input (5-minute TTL) or 2× (1-hour TTL), so a 5-minute cache pays off from the second request. Batch and caching discounts stack.
Example: RAG over a cached document
20,000 input tokens (80% cached) and 400 output tokens, 5,000 requests a day: Claude Haiku 5.5 $114.00, Sonnet 5.5 $2,040, Opus 5.5 $4,080 and Fable 5.1 $9,600 per month (cache writes not included).
Gotchas
- Claude's newer tokenizer (Opus 4.7 and later) produces about 30% more tokens than older models for the same text — re-check token counts when you upgrade.
- Claude Haiku 5.5 bills prompts over 100,000 tokens at $0.50 / $2.50 per 1M for the whole request. Other current models include the full 1M context at standard rates.
- US-only inference (
inference_geo) adds a 1.1× multiplier; Bedrock and Vertex AI have their own price lists.
