🔒 Scales are generated in OKLCH so every step looks evenly spaced; lightness follows Tailwind CSS v4's default palettes.

How to generate a color palette

  1. Choose a base color (or hit Random). It's placed on the step whose lightness matches it best, marked with ●.
  2. Check the small numbers on each swatch — the contrast with the label color — to see which steps work for text.
  3. Click any harmony chip to use it as the new base, or click a swatch to copy its hex.
  4. Name the palette and copy the export for Tailwind v4 (@theme), Tailwind v3 (config), CSS variables or JSON.

How the scale is built

Each step uses OKLCH lightness from Tailwind CSS v4's default palettes (50 ≈ 97% … 500 ≈ 64% … 950 ≈ 26%), so your scale lines up with Tailwind's grays and colors. Chroma (colorfulness) peaks around 500–600 and tapers toward the light and dark ends, and the hue stays constant. Steps near your base bend slightly so the base color itself appears unchanged in the scale.

Using a scale in a design system

StepsTypical use
50–100Page and card backgrounds, subtle hover fills
200–300Borders, dividers, disabled states
400–500Icons, accents, focus rings
600–700Primary buttons and links — usually the first steps with 4.5:1 on white
800–950Headings and body text, dark-mode surfaces

Pair steps at least 500 apart (e.g. 100 with 700) and you'll usually clear WCAG AA. Confirm specific pairs with the contrast checker.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free and private?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser — the colors you enter are never uploaded or logged.

Why OKLCH instead of mixing with white and black?

Mixing with white washes colors out and mixing with black makes them muddy, and the steps don't look evenly spaced. OKLCH keeps the hue and spaces lightness the way eyes perceive it.

How do I use the palette in Tailwind v4?

Copy the Tailwind v4 export — an @theme block with --color-brand-50 … --color-brand-950 — into your main CSS file. Classes like bg-brand-600 and text-brand-900 then work automatically.

Can colors fall outside the sRGB gamut?

Very saturated steps can. The generator reduces chroma just enough to stay inside sRGB, keeping lightness and hue, so every hex value displays correctly everywhere.
