How to convert a Unix timestamp
- Paste a timestamp or a date string; the unit is detected from its length.
- Copy the format you need: ISO 8601, RFC 2822, HTTP date or your local time.
- To go the other way, pick a date and time below, choose your time zone or UTC, and copy the timestamp.
Seconds, milliseconds or nanoseconds?
Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. You can tell the unit from the number of digits: today that's 10 digits in seconds, 13 in milliseconds, 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds.
| Language | Current timestamp | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| JavaScript | Date.now() | ms |
| Python | int(time.time()) | s |
| Go | time.Now().Unix() | s |
| Java | System.currentTimeMillis() | ms |
| PHP | time() | s |
| Bash | date +%s | s |
| PostgreSQL | extract(epoch from now()) | s (decimal) |
| MySQL | UNIX_TIMESTAMP() | s |
The year 2038 problem
A signed 32-bit integer tops out at 2,147,483,647 — 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. One second later it wraps to December 1901. Store timestamps in 64-bit columns (BIGINT, int64), and note that MySQL's TIMESTAMP type still stops at 2038 while DATETIME doesn't. Click “Y2038 limit” above to see the exact moment.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Unix timestamp have a time zone?
No. It's always relative to UTC, so the same instant has the same timestamp everywhere. Time zones only matter when you display it.
Why is my converted date off by a few hours?
Something interpreted it as local time instead of UTC, or vice versa. Note that JavaScript parses "2026-10-18" as UTC midnight but "2026-10-18T00:00" as local midnight.
How are leap seconds handled?
Unix time ignores them: every day is exactly 86,400 seconds, and the clock is adjusted around a leap second instead.
Can timestamps be negative?
Yes — negative values are dates before 1970. For example -86400 is 31 December 1969.
