How to create an EAN-13 barcode

  1. Enter the first 12 digits of your EAN (or all 13).
  2. If a check digit error appears, use the corrected number shown.
  3. Adjust size and text, then download SVG for packaging or PNG for listings.

EAN-13 check digit formula

Multiply the 12 data digits alternately by 1 and 3 starting from the left, add the products, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.

Example for 400638133393: 4·1 + 0·3 + 0·1 + 6·3 + 3·1 + 8·3 + 1·1 + 3·3 + 3·1 + 3·3 + 9·1 + 3·3 = 89, so the check digit is 1 → 4006381333931.

How EAN-13 hides the 13th digit

An EAN-13 symbol has bars for only 12 digits. The first digit is encoded in the pattern of the left half: each of the next six digits uses either an odd-parity (L) or even-parity (G) code, and the L/G sequence identifies the first digit — LLLLLL means 0 (which is why a UPC-A is an EAN-13 starting with 0), LGGLLG means 5, and so on. The right half always uses R codes, which lets scanners read the code upside down.

Prefixes and ISBNs

The first 2–3 digits are the GS1 prefix of the organisation that issued the number (for example 00–13 USA/Canada, 30–37 France, 40–44 Germany, 50 UK, 45/49 Japan) — not necessarily the country of manufacture. Books use the 978 and 979 “Bookland” prefixes: a 13-digit ISBN is an EAN-13, so you can enter it directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make an ISBN barcode?

Yes. Enter the 13-digit ISBN (starting 978 or 979) without hyphens. The 5-digit price add-on used on some books isn't supported yet.

What's EAN-8?

A shorter 8-digit version for small items. Select EAN-8 above and enter 7 digits; the check digit uses the same mod-10 method.

Where can I get an EAN number?

From your national GS1 organisation, which licenses a unique company prefix. Retailers and marketplaces check numbers against the GS1 registry.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. Everything is generated by JavaScript in your browser, so nothing you type or generate is uploaded, logged or stored. It keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
