How to create a UPC barcode
- Enter your 11-digit UPC (company prefix + item number), or all 12 digits.
- Fix any error shown — usually a wrong check digit or a typo.
- Keep human-readable text on; retail packaging normally shows the digits.
- Download SVG for your packaging artwork, or PNG at high resolution.
How the UPC check digit is calculated
- Add the digits in the odd positions (1st, 3rd … 11th) and multiply by 3.
- Add the digits in the even positions (2nd, 4th … 10th).
- Add both results. The check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
Example for 03600029145: odd positions 0+6+0+2+1+5 = 14, × 3 = 42; even positions 3+0+0+9+4 = 16; 42 + 16 = 58, so the check digit is 2 and the full UPC is 036000291452.
Anatomy of a UPC-A
The 12 digits are a GS1 company prefix (6–10 digits), an item reference, and the check digit. The first digit is the number system: 0, 1, 6, 7, 8 for regular products, 2 for variable-weight items like meat and produce, 3 for drugs (NDC), 4 for in-store use and 5 for coupons. The symbol is 95 modules wide: start guard, six digits, centre guard, six digits, end guard.
Where do UPC numbers come from?
To sell in most retail stores and on Amazon you need numbers licensed from GS1 (GS1 US in the United States), which guarantees your company prefix is unique. Resold “cheap UPCs” often fail retailer validation. For internal use — inventory in your own warehouse — any number works, though Code 128 is usually a better fit.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between UPC and EAN?
A UPC-A is a 12-digit code; an EAN-13 adds one digit in front. Any UPC can be written as an EAN-13 by adding a leading 0, and scanners worldwide read both.
What size should a UPC barcode be?
The nominal (100%) size is about 37.3 × 25.9 mm including the quiet zone, and GS1 allows 80%–200%. At 2 px per module and 300 dpi printing, export the PNG at 4× or use SVG and set the width in your layout tool.
Can I make a UPC-E (short) barcode?
Not yet — this tool makes full UPC-A. UPC-E is a zero-suppressed form for very small packages.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything is generated by JavaScript in your browser, so nothing you type or generate is uploaded, logged or stored. It keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
