How to make a barcode

  1. Pick the barcode type: UPC-A or EAN-13 for retail products, Code 128 for shipping and inventory labels, Code 39 for older industrial systems.
  2. Type the data. Invalid characters or wrong check digits are flagged with an exact fix.
  3. Adjust bar width, height, text and colors — the preview updates instantly.
  4. Download SVG for print and design tools, or PNG at 1×–8× resolution.

Printing barcodes that scan

  • Keep the quiet zone — the blank margin on each side (10× the narrowest bar for Code 128/39; about 11 and 7 modules for EAN-13). Scanners need it to find the start.
  • Dark bars on a light background. Black on white is best; red bars are invisible to most laser scanners.
  • Don't stretch a PNG. Use SVG for print, or export PNG at the final size so every bar keeps a whole number of pixels.
  • Test before printing a batch with a phone scanner app or the scanner you'll actually use.

Frequently asked questions

Are these barcodes free to use commercially?

Yes. There's no watermark, sign-up or licence — the images are yours. Note that a retail UPC or EAN number itself must be licensed from GS1; the image is free, the number is not.

Do I need to calculate the check digit?

No. For UPC, EAN-13 and EAN-8, enter the number without its last digit and the check digit is added; enter it with the check digit and it's verified.

SVG or PNG?

SVG is vector, so it stays razor-sharp at any size — best for print, Illustrator, Figma or label software. PNG is best for documents, spreadsheets and web pages.

Why won't my barcode scan?

Most often: too little quiet zone, low contrast, bars blurred by scaling a small PNG, or the scanner isn't configured for that symbology. Try a larger bar width and SVG.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. Everything is generated by JavaScript in your browser, so nothing you type or generate is uploaded, logged or stored. It keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
